At approximately 6:45 PM, Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a report of multiple apartments on fire at 1280 Saxe Street. When firefighters arrived, they found two apartments on fire and the fire had already extended into the attic area. The fire occurred in building number 9 which contained 24 apartments, 20 of which were occupied. All occupants were able to escape without any injuries. The fire originated on the patio of a first floor apartment and then spread to the apartment just above it and also the attic space. Two apartments were damaged by fire while at least seven more apartments had smoke and water damage. Power had to be turned off to the entire building. Red Cross responded to the scene to assist all the occupants displaced by the fire. One firefighter was injured while fighting the fire. He was treated on the scene by Beaumont EMS.
The cause of the fire was determined to be deliberate and a 46 year old female suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Arson charges are pending.
