Monday, April 20, 2020 at 4:32 am, officers responded to a single vehicle crash at Eastex Freeway and Chinn Lane. Upon arrival first responders located a silver Buick GS with severe front end damage in the northbound lanes of the construction area. The vehicle caught fire and was quickly engulfed. Beaumont Fire Department extinguished the fire. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, perished as a result of the crash and fire. The initial investigation revealed the driver was fleeing an angry mother who had caught the driver trying to make contact with her 12 year old daughter. The driver entered the northbound lanes of Eastex Freeway, which are under construction, and struck an unimproved section of roadway causing the crash. Investigators haven’t positively identified the driver yet and next of kin has not been notified.
