The Maurine Gray Literacy Center helps adult students achieve their literacy or testing goals.  Students are evaluated upon entering the program, and progress is closely monitored by staff.

  • Programs Offered

    The program is affiliated with ProLiteracy America, a national literacy organization.

    We offer:

    • Basic literacy tutoring
    • English as a Second Language (ESL)
    • GED preparation
    • Citizenship test preparation

  • Eligibility

    To be eligible for tutoring students must

    • be at least 18 years old
    • be willing to meet with a tutor for one to four hours a week for at least six months
    • provide their own transportation to an approved tutoring site
    • be able to attend a lesson at least 60 minutes.
  • Cost

    • There is a one-time registration fee of $10.
    • All materials and support are provided.
  • Materials

    • Students can utilize Mango Languages – ESL software to help them learn English!mango

      • You will need a library card and an email address.
    • All materials and support are provided.
    • Basic literacy and GED students typically meet one-on-one with a tutor, while ESL students typically meet in a group or classroom setting.

Tutor candidates are carefully screened to determine their understanding and knowledge of working with adult literacy students.
