“The other day while looking out my window, I noticed a lamed bird sitting in the middle of the street. I knew a car would be approaching, so I reached for a towel and rushed outside to see if I could help it. The bird I believe, had flown into some kind of string that disabled its wings. I carefully placed the towel over it, picked it up and sat it on the side of the road. Of course it squirmed, but I was determined to help it fly again. After cutting the string with a rock, the bird flew away. It was free again, to live and fly another day. I knew if I did not help it, surely it would have died.”
It is very hard sometimes to explain to friends and families how important writing is to me. I often find myself comparing it to my breathing, considering I need them both to live. That bird the other day, reminded me of just how sitting down in front of my computer allows me to delve FREELY into my imagination and for whatever time I am allowed, I can escape the hustle and bustle of life. Instead of going over the day’s event, I give into my imagination and let it take me away to a more harmonious place. My little feathered friend depended on those wings to keep him free, just as I depend on my writing to keep me free.”

Lucy Dennis is a native of Port Arthur Texas, where as a little girl attending Carver Elementary School, she was taught that she could be whatever she wanted when she grew up. This very small school under the bridge with magnificent teachers, is where she was introduced to the writings of her favorite authors, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. After graduating from Lincoln High, she attempted higher education. While attending Prairie View, she was met with life changing affairs and decided to leave college but it did not stop her from dreaming to become an author. Undeterred by life taking a strong hit at her, she kept dreaming. When her nest became empty and her nights were quiet, she again put pen to paper.
Lucy is the author of No More Wooden Nickels, The Tracks of His Tears, A Miscarriage of Justice, and now Lucy’s Dance With Life. She is a mother of three, a grandmother of nine and divorced. Her favorite time is when she’s writing. When not writing, she enjoys time with her grandchildren, fishing and an occasional game of chess.
