Flu season began Oct. 1 and will extend through the end of May, with most cases occurring in January or February. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months old and older. Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of influenza complications, including pregnant women, older adults and young children.
Persons with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, kidney and liver disease and cancer are also at increased risk of influenza complications and should be vaccinated every year.
Influenza vaccination is safe and effective and is the single best way to help protect yourself and your family from the flu each year. Other effective methods of preventing the flu are frequent hand washing, staying home from work or school if sick and coughing into the inside crook of the arm.
