At approximately 10:16 AM, Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to one of the dorm buildings at Lamar University, 4701 Cheek, on the report of a fire alarm. When firefighters arrived they found there had been a mattress fire in one of the dorm rooms. The sprinkler system had activated, extinguishing the fire, and all students had evacuated the dorm buildings without injury before firefighters arrived. Due to the sprinkler activation, the fire was confined to the bed in one room. The fire appears to have been caused by a charger for a lap top computer on the bed. The students were allowed to return to the dorm rooms after about 30 minutes.
